Introduction + Chapter one summary/review

Currently I am reading the book “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding. This fictional novel was written in the early 1950s has won a Nobel Prize in 1983; the novel is also considered a modern classic. The story in this book revolves around a group of British schoolboys, whom under a midst of the next world war have survived a plane crash. These schoolboys are now stuck on a tropical uninhabited island, and are left to care for themselves without any adult supervision. With all this freedom, they able to do anything they want. Anything.

In chapter one “The Sound of the Shell”, we meet our protagonist, a fair-haired athletic boy named Ralph. At the lagoon, Ralph encounters another schoolboy, this boy is quite chubby, but he is intellectual, at least he looks intellectual with his thick glasses. As they are talking, the boy introduces himself as Piggy. From this conversation, we find out that, they are in wartime, and that their plane got shot down, and landed on a tropical island. As the chapter progresses piggy finds a conch-shell, which Piggy realized he got use for some sort of a trumpet, to summon the other stranded boys on the island. This was a success and the other boys start to show up on the beach. The oldest one among these schoolboys were around twelve years old, and the youngest being around six. Furthermore, stranded on this island, the boys that realizing that they are without any supervision and starts to elect a leader, the one who was chosen for this job was Ralph.

As the story progresses Ralph finds out that they need some sort of a food source, so he established a hunting squad, who got the main task of finding food. The one he choose for this task was Jack, a boy who wanted to be elected for leader, but lost to Ralph. Jack takes two other choirboys, with him and starts playing around in the jungle. As they are playing in the jungle, jack spots a trapped pig, and reaches for this knife. As he tries to kill the pig he finds out that, he does not have the courage to go through with the deed, and vows to himself that next time he will not flinch.

My personal opinion on this first chapter:  

This novel proves to be a quite fun to read. As these little kids naturally selects a leader to follow, whom splits the boys up into separate groups to work for the good of this small civilization they got going. I really look forward to reading more of this novel, and I think it is going to become a lot more interesting from here on out.
